THE RABIN SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF PEACE AND TOLERANCE A Graduate Study Opportunity at the Harry S. Truman Research Institute at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for students committed to the Advancement of Peace and Tolerance. Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University is pleased to announce The Rabin Scholarship for the Advancement of Peace and Tolerance, an innovative scholarship opportunity for the year 2000-2001. This is open to any doctoral or post-doctoral student in any faculty whose research interest could impact significantly on the advancement of peace and tolerance throughout the world. This program was inaugurated in the present academic year, and the first three Scholars are presently studying together at the Truman Institute. One Canadian student will be chosen to study with two Middle East candidates, one Jewish and one Arab, at the Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The value of each award is US$7500. Funding for additional expenses is also available. BACKGROUND AND GOALS OF THE PROGRAM Fund for the advancement of Peace and Tolerance was created in the aftermath of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Yitzhak Rabin gave his life in the pursuit of peace. Each year this scholarship will enable three students- one Canadian, one Jewish Israeli and one Arab (from Israel or another Middle East country) to study for a one year period at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at the Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace. They will have the opportunity to study in a variety of fields which will advance their abilities to affect the status of peace world wide. Nominations of women and men of all cultural, ethnic, political, racial and religious backgrounds are strongly encouraged. THE RABIN SCHOLARS Candidates must demonstrate superior academic abilities as well as individual initiative and leadership skills. Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited Canadian, American, or Middle East University. The Canadian Scholar must be a Canadian citizen. The successful Canadian and two nominees from the Middle East will enjoy the unique opportunity to study together in a superior academic environment. The selected Rabin Scholars will be enrolled in a specially designed Visiting Graduate Program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in conjunction with the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace and the Raoul Wallenberg or other applicable graduate programs at the Rothberg International School. Scholars may come from a variety of disciplines including: political science, international relations, Middle Eastern studies, economics, law, or other areas relating to the pursuit of peace. THE HARRY S. TRUMAN INSTITUTE The Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace is dedicated to fostering peace and advancing co-operation in the Middle East and among the peoples of the world through research; the sponsorship of conferences, seminars, and colloquia; the provision of fellowships for local and visiting scholars whose research is related to the Institute's activities; and the maintenance of close relations with similar institutes abroad. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM The Rabin Program encompasses a full academic year. Although the academic year extends from October to June, the summer Hebrew language Ulpan may be a mandatory requirement depending upon the participant's level of expertise In the Hebrew language. Scholars must be committed to residing in Jerusalem for the duration of the program. The program will begin with an orientation session in Israel, prior to the beginning of the Fall semester. A full program is provided for the academic year and will be based upon the scholarly needs and graduate level of the successful candidates. This program will include: · Course work in English/Hebrew on topics such as Democracy and Leadership, International Relations, Middle Eastern Studies, Jewish Studies, and Conflict Resolution · A major project, undertaken by each of the three scholars throughout the academic year, in conjunction with a leading academic at the Hebrew University in the individual scholar's field of specialization · An internship, chosen by each scholar from a wide range of possibilities · Special visits with Israeli public figures · Ongoing Hebrew language study, if applicable · Travel in Israel relating to the program In addition, the Rabin Scholars will attend specialized sessions with the Rabin Distinguished Fellow. Chosen each year on the basis of outstanding research or involvement in the study of peace, the fellow will spend from three weeks to two months at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Students will be expected to write papers and participate actively in all classes. In addition, each student will be asked to write an article on his study experience that will be printed and distributed both in Canada and in Israel. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students will be asked to speak in various cities in their country of residence on behalf of the Rabin Scholarship Program. NOMINATION AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES Candidacy for the program is open to any individual who has completed a Master of Arts Degree and is presently enrolled in a doctoral or post-doctoral program. Nominees can request application forms in Canada from the Office of Academic Affairs, Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem or in Israel from the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace. The application will require formal academic transcripts and at least two academic letters of reference, in addition to a letter of nomination from the Dean or Department Chair of the applicant's university. FINANCIAL AWARD The Rabin Scholarship Award is intended to cover full tuition for the academic year, individual tutorials, private group courses, dormitory fees, program-related group travel, medical coverage and other benefits. Where applicable, return airfare and the Hebrew language Ulpan will also be covered. Scholars are responsible for additional personal living expenses including food, local transportation, entertainment and individual travel.
