There are a number of additions to our growing list of Grants and Scholarships.  The Canadian Bureau for International Education administers a number of grants and fellowships as does the The International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).  As well, we now have information online for the Organization of American States PRA Fellowship Program and the well known Fulbright scholarship.

Sept 23rd, 1999 - New Career Building Resources

Gearing up to build your academic empire?  SUNY - Stony Brook has provided an excellent web site with a lot of career building resources: guidance on writing research funding proposals, sources of funding, career opportunities, advice on choosing a mentor etc..., a multifaceted site that was recently highlighted in APA Monitor's "Web Sites of the Month".  The link is posted on our Employment page in the Recourses section.

July 2nd, 1999 - Three New Grants in Resources

There are three new posting in the Grants and Scholarships Section of Resources. StudentAwards.com is a clearing house for many smaller and lesser known bursaries and scholarships. It works by matching a profile, which you provide, to the criterion for the awards. The second posting is on a slightly grander scale. Merrill Lynch's Innovation Grants Competition is awarding up to $150 000 to recent PhD graduates that can best explain and prove the commercial application of their research.  And finally, there is the Grawemeyer award of $200 000 for the so called "best idea in Psychology".

May 18th, 1999 - Volunteers needed for Convention 2000

This item should really read "Convention 2000 in Jeopardy?".  Dr. Joel Goldberg who has faithfully organized the convention for the past decade has resigned as chair of the Convention Committee.  For all intents and purposes he was the Convention Committee.  Needles to say there is a vacuum that needs filling and there is an opportunity here for students to get involved in organizing the convention at the ground floor.  If you are interested or want more information contact Dr. Ruth Berman at  opa@psych.on.ca, or call at (416) 961-5552.

April 16th, 1999 - SIP Psychology / Health Fair Volunteers

OPA's Section of Independent Practice is organizing a public event for the Fall of this year.  Things are currently in the early planning stage and the section has expressed a keen interest in having input from students.  This is a great opportunity to meet and work with established professionals on an event aimed at elevating the status of psychology in Ontario.  Interested students should contact Dr. Barb Bresver at  bunnib@inforamp.net, or leave a message on her voice mail at (416) 972-0009.

February 22nd, 1999 - Thesis Contest Winners

SOSIP is pleased to announce the 1999 Thesis Contest winners.  There was a tie this year for the Master's level award:  Kontantine Zakzanis from York University for his thesis titled The Elusive Core: A Meta-Analysis of Neurocognitive Test Findings in Schizophrenia and Revital Ben-Knaz also from York for her thesis titled, 'You're in the Army Now': Exploring the Role of Parenting Styles and Relationships with Parents for Adjustment in the Army.  The winner at the Doctoral level was Dr. Christina Brown from the University of Toronto for her dissertation titled Different Brain Loci Mediate Neuropeptide Y's Effects on Feeding Vs. Reward.  Our congratulations go out to all three for their fine academic work.  We would also like to thank and congratulate everyone else who made a submission this year.  We had a great turn out this year with 23 submissions in the MA category and 11 for the PhD.  We also had 11 psychologists from across Ontario who generously volunteered their time in reviewing the abstracts.  And finally we would like to thank Psychometrics Canada Ltd. and Oxford University Press Canada for their generous donations of book prizes.

A complete list of participants and the judges who volunteered to review the abstracts can be found on the 1999 Thesis Contest Winners and Participants web page

January 25th, 1999 - Seeking Input for Ethics Code Revision (sourced from the APAGS Newsletter Winter '99, vol. 11) APA's Ethics Code Task Force is in the process of revising their 1992 Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and they are looking for input from interested parties.  Specifically, they are looking for feedback on the adequacy of the existing code, and suggestions for additional principles and standards in areas that may not currently be covered.  Areas for consideration include, but are not limited to new technologies (e.g. telehealth, electronic databases), organizational psychology, empirically supported treatments, multiple relationships, abuses of power, etc...

Now for the details:

For each comment you submit, describe a brief situation of which you have knowledge that provides a context for discussing how the components of the Code's Preamble, the Six General Principles and or one or more of the Standards
     a) enhance or impair the ability of psychologists to conduct
their work in an ethical manner
     b) protect (or do not protect) the public
     c) reflect (or do not reflect)  the scope of psychologist's work
          related activities
     d) are (or are not) clearly understood, and
     e) are (or are not) enforceable
If applicable, suggest wording for specific revised or new principles or standards that would address your ethical concerns.

Note: Do not include personally identifying information for others
